Jason Hugh McMurtrey Summer Shade, KY Obituary, Death: Firefighter and Summer Shade Collision Owner Jason Hugh McMurtrey Dies at 36

Jason Hugh McMurtrey, 36, of Summer Shade, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at U of L Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 15, 1989, at TJ Samson Community Hospital to his loving parents, Tom and Freda McPherson McMurtrey.

Jason was a dedicated member of his community. He was part owner of Summer Shade Collision and proudly served as a volunteer firefighter with the Summer Shade Fire Department for nine years. He was known for his strong work ethic, willingness to help others, and deep commitment to those around him. Outside of work, Jason found joy in trap shooting, riding horses, and playfully aggravating his friends and family, bringing laughter to many.

On September 28, 2013, Jason married the love of his life, Katie Hodges McMurtrey. Their bond was unwavering, and Katie remained faithfully by his side throughout his illness, offering constant love and support.

In addition to his wife, Jason is survived by his parents, Tom and Freda McMurtrey of Summer Shade; his brother, Brian (Beth) McMurtrey; and his cherished nieces and nephews: Emma, Micah, Aubrey, Adalyn, Andrew Hugh, Averie, and Ivy. He is also survived by his special aunt, Wilmetta McPherson; his in-laws, Tammi (Kenyon) Wallace and Richard (Betsy) Hodges; his sister-in-law, Kelsie (Tyler) Garmon; grandmothers-in-law, Linda Hodges and Shirley Killman; along with several aunts, uncles, and his beloved dog, Kimber.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Arlene McMurtrey, Hughie and Olene McPherson; his grandfathers-in-law, Dalton Hodges and Paul Killman; and his dog, Ruger.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at McMurtrey Funeral Home, with burial to follow in White Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday after 8:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Summer Shade Fire Department.
