Harley Roscoe Shaffer Appomattox, VA Death, Obituary: Harley Roscoe Shaffer Jr., 80, Honored for Lifelong Service in Military, Law Enforcement, and Faith Community

Harley Roscoe Shaffer Jr., 80, of Appomattox, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Sally Bartley Shaffer and a man whose life was defined by service, faith, and dedication to his community.

Born on September 2, 1945, in McLean, Virginia, he was the son of the late Madeline Moore Shaffer and Harley Roscoe Shaffer Sr. Harley was a devoted member of Glenn Memorial Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for many years as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. His commitment to his church family reflected his deep faith and his enduring desire to guide and support others in their spiritual journeys.

Harley honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he continued a life of public service as a police officer in both Fairfax and Appomattox County. He also served as a firefighter with the McLean Volunteer Fire Department, demonstrating courage, discipline, and a steadfast commitment to protecting others.

He is survived by his children, Karin D. Robertson and husband Curt, Waylon Shaffer, and Emily Shaffer; his grandchildren, Gavyn Robertson and Makenna Robertson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish his memory.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two children, including an infant son and his son Larry Shaffer.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Glenn Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Schwerdtfeger officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund or Glenn Memorial Baptist Church youth ministries. Harley Shaffer Jr.’s legacy of service, faith, and integrity will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
