A serious collision in Clay County, Iowa, has left a Spencer man with significant injuries following an accident involving a motorcycle and a semi-truck on Thursday afternoon. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, which occurred at a busy highway intersection near Spencer.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the incident took place at approximately 12:00 p.m. at the junction of U.S. Highway 71 and U.S. Highway 18. A 2016 Freightliner semi-truck, driven by a 52-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, had been stopped in the median and was attempting to proceed east onto 320th Street. As the truck entered the intersection, its trailer was struck by a northbound motorcycle.
The motorcycle, a 1956 Harley-Davidson operated by 65-year-old Gerald Fulkner of Spencer, collided with the trailer and became trapped beneath it. Both the motorcycle and its rider were dragged a distance before the semi-truck came to a complete stop. The impact resulted in severe injuries to Fulkner, prompting an immediate emergency response.
First responders arrived quickly at the scene and provided urgent medical assistance. Fulkner was initially transported to a hospital in Spencer for stabilization before being airlifted to a medical facility in Sioux Falls for advanced treatment. His current condition has not been publicly updated, but the severity of the crash indicates the seriousness of his injuries.
The collision caused temporary disruption to traffic in the area as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene and ensure the safety of other motorists. Investigators are continuing to examine all factors that may have contributed to the accident, including road conditions, visibility, and right-of-way circumstances.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of caution and awareness at highway intersections, particularly when large commercial vehicles and motorcycles share the road.
